The shadow from the stick would show the time when it reached the sectors marked on the wall or floor. This simple construction helped them to determine the time throughout the day, but at night they were orientating in time by watching the stars. Because military personnel can be involved in missions that cross time zones, they need a common time zone reference, so they know they’re talking about the same thing. "Zulu" or "Z" indicates that the time zone being referenced is Greenwich Mean Time (Coordinated Universal Time), the time zone that regulates the world’s clocks. Adding 12 hours to any PM hour (excluding noon) and dropping the AM/PM indicator is how you convert standard time to military time.
